Players is a movie of another con job, technically the best con job ever shown in Bollywood. A gang of “the best” players group together to rob 10000 crore worth gold from Russian government. The gang consists an illusionist (Bobby Deol), a hacker (Neil Mukesh), an explosive expert (Sikander Kher), a prosthetic expert (Omi Vaidya), a locomotive expert ( Bipasha Basu) and a voice over expert (Abhishek Bachchan).
The first half of the movie is quite good and enjoyable, the train robbery scene is thrilling. But at the end of the first half there is betrayal and murders. As a Abbas-Mustan flick you can easily expect that there will be a come back, as you have seen in Ajnabee, Humraaz, and Race. The second half is where the actual Italian Job copying gets started. Second half is about revenge and getting back the golds. Who have already watched Italian Job will get disappointed here. The chasing scenes in Mini Cooper was way too good in Italian Job. But on the other hand Mini gets a good platform to promote their cooper series parallel with Delhi Auto Expo. The finishing is not dragged, but could have been better. I understood why spider called the mafia to get the golds, but didn’t understand why there is not a single action scene with mafias other than searching the cooper. If the gang is eagerly want the golds, they could have stopped them and get them in their custody. Another disappointment is the gold made car. Between the robbery and finishing the revenge I guess there were hardly 2 to 3 hours. I am not sure how one can make four cars out of golds in 3 hours with properly painting, in our area only paint job takes one day at least.
Few actors tried to do their best. I liked Abhishek Bachchan again after Dum Maro Dum, he does good in serious roles. Bipasha as usual did a good job with her role. Sikander Kher had nothing much to do, and Omi Vaidya is suddenly not required, but did a good job with his comic timing. I expected Bobby Deol to get a bigger role, as he always does good in Abbas-Mustan flicks.
The biggest disappointments were Sonam Kapur and Neil. Neil had a good role in his hand, but had just fingered it, on the other had Sonam looked stiffed doll from Madame Tussaudes, stylish but doesn’t have any idea how to act. I would also like to suggest Sonam, please don’t try to seduce a guy, it doesn’t suit you.
The cinematography is superb, the action scenes are mostly well executed.
My rating: 3/5 (More than average)
